The whole "warring magic schools summon an unborn moon creature is also the topic of Aleister Crowley's Moonchild.īeyond the game's plot, there's a lot of heavy-handed subtext involving parenthood. There's a lot of blatant Lovecraft at play here, but also a lot of modern alien conspiracy, choosing the tall, white other worldly beings over the more popular Greys. Gaining cosmic wisdom doesn't mean a whole lot if you're now a floppy squid or a guy with forty snakes coming out of his neck. I'm happy enough with them being (highlight to read spoiler) space aliens summoned by humans to gain enlightenment, but instead bring nothing but death in the form of evolution. The game's balance is kind of a mess: You can go from areas with nearly harmless enemies to areas that take so much effort that they stop being fun, back to areas where you barely take damage.Dark Souls had a perfect system with its bonfires which provided all of these options, and the similar lantern system in Bloodborne feels much older and clunkier in comparison. The game's load times are extremely long, and since you need to teleport back home to level up, restore items, reset enemies, teleport between areas, or repair weapons, you're going to see them a lot. While Bloodborne is a spectacular game, it's not perfect, but none of its imperfections were enough to bother me too deeply.
